The cover design varies each year for this publication - some editions have been more abstract while others take inspiration from the magazine's name. The previous issue took the latter route and featured a child holding a torch in a cave on the front cover. I wanted the 2019 issue to feel like a continuation of the recent illustrative style while being distinct from other volumes. The Torch showcases both art and written pieces, which sparked the idea of a fountain pen becoming the "torch" with watercolor flames bursting from it.
